Aaliyah, The Weeknd release collaborative single

Two R&B superstars team

Blackground Records and Empire have dropped “Poison,” a new collaboration between Aaliyah and The Weeknd, to digital providers. The song is set to appear on Aaliyah’s posthumous studio album due at a later date.

The track comes two decades after the tragic passing of Aaliyah, who died in an August 2001 plane crash at the age of 22. Aaliyah’s uncle and Blackground Records founder, Barry Hankerson, controls Aaliyah’s music. He has hinted that Drake, Future, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown and Snoop Dogg may be other collaborators on the forthcoming project.

The Weeknd previously sampled the Princess of R&B’s “Rock the Boat” on “What You Need” from 2012 compilation Trilogy album. The song was revived when his House of Balloons Mixtape was reissued for its 10th anniversary on streaming services earlier this year.

Aaliyah’s catalog was mostly unavailable digitally until this summer when Hankerson released it through Empire’s distribution.  The record exec has battled with the singer’s estate, which is controlled by Aaliyah’s mother Diane Haughton, over the digital release of her music. It finally hit DSPs on August 20th, five days to the year she died on August 25, 2001.

Her catalog will be issued on vinyl in March and April 2022.
