Alex Van Halen breaks silence on brother’s death

Eddie Van Halen passed away on Oct 6

Alex Van Halen has broken his silence about his brother Eddie’s death. The Van Halen drummer sent Van Halen News Desk a brief message about the late guitarist.

“Hey Ed. Love you. See you on the other side. Your brother, Al,” he writes.

Eddie Van Halen died on October 6 at the age of 65 after a long battle with throat cancer. The legendary guitarist passed with his wife Janine, son Wolfgang and Alex at his side at a Santa Monica hospital after doctors discovered his cancer had spread beyond his throat and into his brain and other organs and his health declined rapidly.

Following his passing, Sammy Hagar confirmed he had secretly rekindled his relationship with Eddie earlier this year. In a letter sent to and read by Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show, Hagar claims the pair had squashed their decades-long feud when they began exchanging texts earlier this year. However, Hagar shares that both parties agreed “not to tell anyone” due to the reunion rumors that would begin running rampant, and that Van Halen didn’t want anyone knowing about his health.

Each of his former band members have also spoken out about his passing. Original frontman David Lee Roth shares, “What a Long Great Trip It’s Been..,” while original bassist Michael Anthony writes, “No words… Heartbroken, my love to the family.”

His son, and most recently bassist, Wolfgang Van Halen, confirmed the news of his father’s death earlier this week. “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” Wolfgang shares.

Tributes have poured in from celebrities, fans, journalists, and others from across the globe.

In honor of the Van Halen guitar hero, MTV Classic has shared a Throwback Thursday video of Eddie giving Chris Connelly a tour of his 5150 home studio in 1998.
