Australian Billy Roberts sounds American country rock on ‘Go By Myself’

Hard to believe that this very American sounding country rock album was made by an Australian. Indeed it was which proves that the themes Billy Roberts talks about on his sophomore release, Go By Myself, are as common halfway around the world as they are at home.

Roberts manages strike a nerve on a variety of issues but before getting into that, this is an album of great sounding country rock songs. These are the songs that you’d hear coming out of from trucks gliding down on the interstate in the heartland. It’s guy’s music for sure and Roberts is their spokesman. Not much is pretty on this album as Roberts tells tales of a very pessimistic world and intertwines them with very current issues facing not just America but the world: financial collapse, war and the breakdown of traditional values. Roberts sings about struggles but he sings with plenty of heart. It’s not always a beautiful world but Go By Myself does have plenty of beautiful music.
