Billie Joe Armstrong renounces US citizenship after Roe vs Wade override

Rocker proclaims news on stage in London

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong declared that he’s renouncing his US citizenship after the Supreme Court overturned Roe Vs Wade on Friday (June 24th). The rocker made the announcement during the band’s Hella Mega Tour headlining set in London on Friday.

“Fuck America! I’m fucking renouncing my citizenship. I’m fucking coming here,” he says in a viral video. “There’s just too much fucking stupid in the world to go back to that miserable fucking excuse for a country. Oh, I’m not kidding. You’re going to get a lot of me here in the coming days.”

He echoed that statement during a performance in Huddersfield, England on Saturday (June 25th). “Fuck the Supreme Court of America,” he said, before launching into “American Idiot,” a song the trio released in 2004 out of anger for then President George W Bush’s leadership.

Armstrong is one of many musicians who’ve spoken out against the decision to overturn the abortion law.

Pop star Olivia Rodrigo brought Lily Allen on stage during her Saturday headlining Glastonbury set to sing Allen’s “Fuck You” to the Supreme Court justices who overturned the Roe vs Wade doctrine.

“I’m devastated and terrified,” the 19-year-old Rodrigo addressed the crowd. “So many women and so many girls are going to die because of this. I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have showed us that at the end of the day, they truly don’t give a shit about freedom. The song is for the justices: Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh. We hate you! We hate you.”

Lizzo tweeted that she’ll pledge a half a million dollars for abortion rights.

“I’m pledging $500k from my upcoming tour to Planned Parenthood and Abortion Rights. Live Nation agreed to match — to make it 1 million dollars,” she writes. “Black women & women of color have historically had disproportionately less access to family planning resources— this is a great loss but not a new one. The most important thing is action & loud voices.
Planned Parenthood, Abortion Funds & organizations like them will need funding to continue offering services to people who are most harmed by this ban. We are going to give proceeds to Abortion Funds as well! Thank you!”

Halsey, Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey, Pearl Jam and others have also shared opposition of the decision.
