Guitarist was carried off stage on stretcher

Latin rock guitarist Carlos Santana was carried off a Michigan stage tonight (Tues, July 5th) after suffering from a “severe medical emergency” while performing. The 74-year-old musician was about an hour into his show at Pine Knob Music Festival when the incident occurred, forcing the cancelation of his performance.

Ultimate Classic Rock reports that after Santana introduced and began performing “Joy” from his 2021 album, Blessings & Miracles, he “walked over to a riser, sat down and appeared to pass out.”

The show was immediately stopped and he was attended to by medical personnel on stage. Santana was wheeled off stage on a stretcher about 20 minutes later after a crew member explained there was a “severe medical emergency” and asked the audience to leave as Santana waved.

It was later revealed via Santana’s social media accounts that he had suffered from heat exhaustion and dehydration.

“Rock legend Carlos Santana was over-taken by heat exhaustion and dehydration during a concert Tuesday (July 5) evening in Michigan. The guitar great was taken from his show at Pine Knob Music Theatre (formerly DTE Energy Music Theatre), an outdoor amphitheater in Clarkston, some 40 miles northwest of Detroit, Michigan. Carlos was taken to the emergency department at McLaren Clarkston for observation and is doing well,” Santana’s manager Michael Vrionis shares.

Santana himself, shares, “Thank you for your precious prayers. Cindy and I we are good just taking it easy. [I] forgot to eat and drink water so i dehydrated and passed out. Blessings and miracles to you all,” he writes.

The show with Earth, Wind & Fire for July 6th at The Pavilion at Star Lake (formerly the S&T Bank Music Park) in Burgettstown, PA will be postponed to a later date. Live Nation will follow with more details.

The guitarist underwent an “unscheduled heart procedure” that canceled his December 2021 residency at the House of Blues Las Vegas.

Santana is currently co-headlining the Miraculous Supernatural Tour with Earth Wind & Fire. The trek, which was postponed by the pandemic, wraps the North American leg at the end of August.

Two weeks later, he’ll resume his An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live Vegas residency through the fall.
