Chad Smith, Will Ferrell to have drum battle ‘Tonight Show’

Red Hot Chili Peppers and Chickenfoot drummer Chad Smith and actor Will Ferrell will have a “drum battle” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, May 22nd on NBC.

Fallon made the announcement during Thursday’s (May 15th) episode. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m excited to announce that the Will Ferrell, Chad Smith drum off will be held right here on The Tonight Show, next Thursday, May 22nd,” Fallon exclaimed. “One week from today, we’re gonna settle once and for all who’s the better drummer: Will Ferrell or Chad Smith, the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.”

The friendly rivalry began earlier this year when Ferrell addressed the notion on a Reddit AMA that he and Smith are celebrity dopplegangers. “A lot of people think that it’s me playing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers,” he writes. “But that would be an insult to Chad Smith. The truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith.”

Ferrell recorded a thank you message after his Reddit AMA for Funny Or Die where he also admitted he was the real Chad Smith.

Smith then retaliated with his own video telling Ferrell not to impersonate him and challenged Ferrell to “the greatest drum off the world has ever seen.”

Rolling Stone spoke to the real Chad Smith about the impending duel, “We’re going to have a drum-off to see who the real Chad Smith is. I’m all for it. But unless Will’s been practicing or is secretly a crazy, wild drummer, I think it’ll be evident right off the bat who the real Chad Smith is. I’m ready to take him down.”

Ferrell replied, “I have not been practicing There’s no amount of practice that would help me become a good drummer.”

Despite their “differences,” the two will be doing the public a service with the drum off. The pair have raised over $300,000 for Cancer for College and Little Kids Rock for the battle to occur. Smith states the winner of the battle will receive a giant golden cowbell, and if Smith wins, “[Will] has to wash my car for a month and give me pedicures,” but if Ferrell wins, Smith claims, “I have to be his stand-in for his next film.”
