Christina Aguilera returning, Shakira exiting ‘The Voice’

NBC made the announcement during their Upfronts presentation

Pop diva Christina Aguilera is returning to NBC’s The Voice this fall for its fifth cycle as Latin artist Shakira leaves after just one season. It is reported that Aguilera has signed her contract with NBC to return next season for a $17 million payload, close to what she made during Season 3.

The network made the announcement during its Upfronts presentation in New York on Monday (May 13th). An insider said Augilera’s return has been “kept under wraps for a couple of months.” No other coaches were announced at the time.

Aguilera was one of two judges to leave after Season 3 as she began to promote her Lotus album and tour. Original judge Cee Lo Green also left to focus on his music career, and Shakira and Usher stepped in to replace them. At the time of the departures, executive producer Mark Burnett claimed that the coaches would rotate in and out as they are working artists. He also stated that along with Aguilera and Green, original coaches Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, would always be welcomed back to the judges’ chair anytime they wanted to leave and return.

Upon Aguilera’s return, fans of the show can expect to see sparkly outfits, busty tops and big hair along with extended rude, egotistical and conniving commentary, and not to mention, loud and obnoxious comments, during Season 5.

The Voice has been a smash breakthrough for NBC which has been struggling in ratings the last couple of years. During it’s four seasons, it has quickly risen to the top of the reality talent show genre even replacing Fox’s American Idol among the nominees for Outstanding Reality Competition during last year’s Emmy’s.
