‘Concert for Ronnie Montrose’ tribute DVD detailed

The tribute concert held on April 27, 2012 at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco for rock guitar legend Ronnie Montrose, who passed away on March 3, 2012, is coming to DVD on December 10th. Concert For Ronnie Montrose – A Celebration Of His Life In Music features artists whom Montrose collaborated with, mentored and produced throughout his 40 year career, coming together to honor the Father of American Hard Rock.

The concert features surviving original members of both of his bands — Montrose (Sammy Hagar, Bill “Electric” Church and Denny Carmassi with Hagar’s Chickenfoot bandmate Joe Satriani) and GAMMA (Davey Pattison, Denny Carmassi and Glenn Letsch with Marc Bonilla) — along with Neal Schon of Journey, Ricky Phillips of Styx, Steve Smith formerly of Journey, Ed Roth, Jimmy Paxson of Stevie Nicks, Jeff Watson formerly of Night Ranger, Tesla, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer both of KISS, Eric Martin of Mr. Big and more.

Sharing memories of the band’s early days and running through the group’s classic tracks with his old bandmates stirred “a lot of memories up here,” as Hagar put it from the stage. The quartet of players shared a sweaty embrace with smiles all around after performing “Connection” by the Rolling Stones which Montrose covered on its second record.

Journey guitarist Neal Schon said the sold-out Regency Center came “unglued” during the evening of music, which he opened, sharing the stage with Styx bassist and former Bad English bandmate Ricky Phillips, Montrose keyboardist Ed Roth and Schon’s former Journey bandmate Steve Smith on drums. This line-up performed two of Ronnie’s signature tracks from the 1978 Open Fire release, including the title track.

It was an evening to celebrate the talents of one of the Bay Area’s own, rather than mourn. Tesla lead singer Jeff Keith might have summarized it best when he said “We’re here to share the love.”

The DVD includes 16 live performances as well as bonus features such as interviews, a photo gallery and seven additional Ronnie hits recorded and filmed at Bob Weir’s TRI Studios by an all-star band including Chuck Terpo, Mario Cipollina, Tal Morris, Dave Meniketti and members of Y&T.

A t-shirt of the concert will also available along with a bundle that includes the DVD, Ronnie’s re-released CD Bearings and the T-shirt.
