Deacon Frey leaves The Eagles

Eagles wrap the Hotel California Tour in May

Deacon Frey, son of the late Glenn Frey, has left the Eagles after nearly five years. The band, featuring Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit and Vince Gill, announced the departure on social media today (Wed, Apr 6th).

“Deacon Frey has devoted the past four and a half years to carrying on his father’s legacy and, after some weeks of reflection, he now feels that it is time for him to forge his own path. We understand, completely, and we support him in whatever he wishes to pursue in the years ahead,” the band shares in a statement.

“In the wake of his dad’s demise, Deacon, at age 24, did an extraordinary thing by stepping from relative anonymity into the very public world of his father’s long illustrious career. We are grateful to Deacon for his admirable efforts and we wish him well as he charts his future. Deacon’s Eagles Family will always be here to surround him with love, support and goodwill, and he is always welcome to join us onstage at any future concerts, if he so desires. We hope our fans will join us in wishing Deacon the very best as he moves into the next phase of his career.”

Deacon joined the group after his father, who co-founded the band in Southern California in 1971, passed away in 2017. Deacon has not performed this year on the group’s Hotel California Tour due to an undisclosed illness.

The Eagles kicked off the 63-date Hotel California Tour in 2019 to rave reviews and critical acclaim. To date, they have performed more than 40 sold out shows in 26 major US arenas, including five nights at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City, four nights at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, and three concerts at the Forum in Los Angeles. The tour continues through the end of May when the guys return to Las Vegas for an encore performance of the band’s three sold out concerts in 2019 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Hotel California is the third best-selling US album in history, certified 26-times Platinum by the RIAA. After its release in 1976, it topped the charts and won two GRAMMY Awards for “New Kid in Town” and “Hotel California.” Several of the songs from the album have never been performed since the original Hotel California Tour. The band’s Their Greatest Hits 1971-1977 is the best-selling US album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times Platinum.
