Parton will accept the honor if awarded

Dolly Parton has reconsidered withdrawing her nomination from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Parton tells NPR’s Morning Edition that she will “gracefully” accept the honor, if she’s voted into the Class of 2022.

“Well, I’ll accept gracefully. I will just say ‘thanks’ and I will accept that because the fans vote,” she says. “When i said that, it was always my belief that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was for the people in rock music. And I have found out lately that it’s not necessarily that, but if they can’t go there to be recognized, where do they go? So I felt like I would be taking away from someone that maybe deserved it, certainly more than me since I never considered myself a rock artist. But obviously, there’s more to it than that.”

The country superstar made headlines last month when she declined her nomination, stating she doesn’t feel worthy of the honor at this time.

“Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right. I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out. I do hope that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will understand and be willing to consider me again – if I’m ever worthy,” Parton writes.

The Rock Hall addressed the situation, stating they wouldn’t revoke her nomination.

“Dolly’s nomination, along with the other 16 for the class of 2022 was sent out [in early March] to our 1200 general ballot voters, the majority of whom are artists themselves, for consideration for induction at our ceremony,” the Rock Hall shared at the time. “We are in awe of Dolly’s brilliant talent and pioneering spirit and are proud to have nominated her for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.”

Parton was on the ballot for 2022 nominees alongside Beck, Pat Benatar, Kate Bush, DEVO, Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics, Judas Priest, Fela Kuti, MC5, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon, A Tribe Called Quest and Dionne Warwick.

Fan voting ends today (Fri, Apr 29th) with Parton placing fifth overall with nearly 393,000 votes. Duran Duran, Eminem, Pat Benetar and Eurythmics round out the top five. The results will be shared in May with the induction to follow in October.
