Rocketman will be released in May 2019

The first teaser trailer to Rocketman, an epic musical fantasy of Elton John’s life, has been released. The film stars Taron Egerton as John, Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as manager John Reid and Bryce Dallas Howard as John’s mother, Sheila Eileen.

“There are moments in a rock star’s life that define who he is,” Reid states in the trailer with a soundtrack set to the title song. “Where there was a darkness, there is now you — and it’s going to be a wild ride.”

The one minute teaser gives fans a glimpse of the many famous costumes John has donned over the years. The film follows John from his years as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music through his influential and enduring musical partnership with Bernie Taupin. Egerton is singing the songs himself, including “Rocket Man” in the trailer.

Rocketman has been in several stages of development since John announced the semi-biopic in 2012. He initially envisioned Justin Timberlake portraying himself, but Tom Hardy was cast early on. Due to the incredible vocal demands of the film, Hardy had to drop out with Egerton signing on in 2017.

Paramount Pictures will release the Dexter Fletcher directed film on May 31, 2019. Fletcher took over for Brian Singer on the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsodyset to be released next month, but will be uncredited due to Directors Guild of America (DGA) rules stating only one director can be credited per project. John serves as a producer on the project.
