Manuel chats with Matt Bailey

Designer Manuel Cuevas is so synonymous with combining fashion and music that he’s mostly known by his first name. Manuel was responsible for making Johnny Cash the Man in Black, crafting Elvis’ signature gold lamé suit, dressing all three Hank Williams, and creating garments for Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, The Beatles, Dolly Parton, Dwight Yoakam, Tim McGraw, and many more.

The man is not a fashion designer. He is a costumer and an artist as his original designs have become the trademark of true American style.

On a fall 2021 trip through Nashville, Matt Bailey stopped by Manuel’s shop where the pair chatted in person. We first met Manuel during our joint trip to Music City in the fall of 2020. While an interview wasn’t planned this time, Manuel was gracious enough to sit down with Matt and chat about his career and legacy across the music stratosphere.
