Newton is synonymous with Las Vegas
No other name or person is so defining, representative, or synonymous with Las Vegas and the Entertainment Capital of the World than Mr. Las Vegas himself — Wayne Newton. Recognized and revered around the world, Newton is known for his iconic signature song, “Danke Schoen” in addition to countless other top hit singles including, “Daddy, Don’t You Walk So Fast,” “Red Roses for a Blue Lady,” “At This Moment,” “The Letter,” “Summer Wind” and “Years.”
Newton is celebrating his 64th year of performing in Las Vegas, including historic shows at Flamingo Las Vegas where he made his first headlining performances in 1963. Wayne: Up Close and Personal is currently rated in the top 10 percent globally on Trip Advisor and continues to draw fans globally.
Matt Bailey recently sat down with the international icon backstage after a show in Sin City which the two discussed Newton’s career and how the Las Vegas Strip has attracted superstar hitmakers who were once afraid to play the area.
“It’s wonderful,” Newton says of the talent headlining the Strip, “because so many times, so much of the performances come into town for two weeks and they go their way and then come back. Now with the people realizing that you can stay here, you don’t have to leave. As I did, it’s wonderful, because we’re getting acts now that wouldn’t play Vegas before. A lot of the route groups and those kinds of wonderful talented people would not come here, because they didn’t like the image. So the town has changed in that aspect of it. Now we’ve got television shows emanating from here and so on. But it’s wonderful because it’s bringing a lot of incredible talent to our city.”
Newton has performed live in front of more than 40 million people during a record-setting run of 25,000-plus shows in Las Vegas alone. He has recorded and released an astounding 165 albums in his career.
