Big Spark Music Group powerhouse vocalist-songstress Olivia Lane has announced her brand new single “You Part 2” will hit country radio on June 8th. For those unfamiliar with the Texas born singer, she has only lived in Nashville for two years, but has garnered a lot of national attention by CMT, iHeartRadio, Country Weekly and others, just to name a few, from her previous two singles: “Steal Me Away” and “Love Thing.” She has even been tapped to open for Wynonna Judd, Frankie Ballard and Randy Houser and has hosted a local music series called “Diva Jam” at listening rooms around town.
The Houston, TX native made the move to Nashville after completing her degree in music and theater at USC in Los Angeles, where she moved when she was 18. During college, she spent a couple of summers interning along Music Row which sparked her relationship with the town. It was during this time she realized she wanted to pursue a country singing and songwriting career after college.
“Literally two weeks after I graduated, my car was packed, I drove across country with my two best guy friends. We stopped in Texas to hang out with some of my friends and family and went straight to Tennessee,” she tells us.
Lane and her friends landed an hour south of Nashville at Manchester’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival before officially calling Nashville home the next day. She says it was that experience that really inspired her.
“I think seeing Paul McCartney and being in Tennessee and having such a great experience of music at Bonnaroo was what really propelled me into thinking like, ‘Yes, I gotta do music with my life, it’s amazing!'” she continues. “Just his music and ‘Blackbird’ was actually one of the first songs I learned on guitar and like, I was standing there and I just started kinda like getting very emotional in that moment. I was like, ‘Wow! Like, I can’t believe this! This is the first song I learned on guitar and Paul McCartney is playing it. I have my best friend beside me! This can’t be anymore perfect for encouraging me to be excited for my write that I have on Monday!'”
While working the summers in Nashville, Lane was able to meet a variety of industry personnel who she now closely works with on her own independent label, Big Spark Music Group. Producer Ilya Toshinskiy, who has worked with Dolly Parton and Carrie Underwood, and Craig Bann at AristoMedia Group, who pitches her music videos to various outlets including CMT, GAC and ZUUS, are part of her team. She has co-writing credits with Toshinksiy, Danny Myrick, co-writer of Jason Aldean’s “She’s Country,” and others.
“It was really important for me to find a producer who would believe in me,” she says on Toshinskiy. “I wanted someone who would work with me on development, but still keeping Olivia, still keeping the essence of who I am.”
Lane’s sound is a combination of country elements – mandolin, banjo, lyrics sweetly laced with Texas twang – with a pop energy and locomotive rhythms that capture her every-moving spirit. Growing up with a mother who was a regional Texas singer, she was introduced to a variety of genres that she incorporates into her music.
“I am obsessed with Linda Ronstadt,” she tells us, but says ’60s and ’70s rock are among her favorite genres. She also credits Patsy Cline, Katy Perry, Jason Derulo and James Taylor among her influences. “You Part 2” even has a hip hop vibe to it because she was listening to Nelly before writing it.
“‘You Part 2’ is the second single to country radio and it’s a little bit of a departure from the first single, ‘Steal Me Away’,” she tells us. “I wanted to write a song — it’s inspired by personal events, for one. I wanted to write a song being on the other side of a breakup — past the sadness, past the madness, past the craziness and be on the stronger side, and it turned out to be kind of a hip hop anthem for breaking up.”
Lane says the story telling aspect of country music writing is what initially drew her to Nashville. “For me, [country music is] a lifestyle and it’s true lyrics. If you’re writing something that’s true to you then that’s country. How I grew up, my lifestyle and stories – that’s number one to me. Stories are everything.”
Lane is not just another blonde female emerging country artist. She is a force to be reckon with who has a bright future ahead. With the help from her team, Lane has done more than most independent artists ever do. She’s managed to collect more than 50 thousand social media followers, was one of only five emerging country artists selected for the prestigious Macy’s iHeartRadio Rising Star national campaign, has appeared on SiriusXM’s The Highway channel, has been chosen for Country Weekly’s 2015 Who’s New list and the magazine’s 2015 Spring Fashion shoot and so much more.
As her success grows, Lane plans to use her indie label as a stepping stone to a larger label for more leverage. “I want them to court me and I want to court them,” she explains. “I’m very adamant about wanting to be a strong female, I think again, like that’s what I want to be and I want that presence to be on country radio right now.”
The single ships to radio for immediate airplay beginning June 8th, but fans can purchase the single now on iTunes. Fans can also buy the Steal Me Away EP and Love Thing EP or a special ten track digital download of both of EPs including four songs not available anywhere else and two music videos via her website. An official music video is set to be released around the same time, but a teaser official lyric video can be viewed below.
