Krystal Keith is no stranger to the hard work and dedication it takes to pursue country music. After all, her father is the amazing Toby Keith. Krystal is set to release her album Whiskey & Lace later this year, but her current self titled EP just came out this week. She gives us a sample of her upcoming album. Keith’s voice is soft, pure and powerful. One of the songs on the EP, “Daddy Dance With Me,” was a gift to her father. The song is very well written and it’s one of my favorites. We caught up with Keith to find out more about her EP and, of course, what it was like growing up with a superstar father.
At what age did you know you wanted to pursue music?
There was never an age when I didn’t want to pursue it. It was always my plan and always my path.
Do you think being the daughter of Toby Keith helped you learn more about music than you normally would have?
I think in some aspects it did. We never sat down and did music lessons; he didn’t push music on me. However, it’s impossible not to learn the processes as much as I was around it all. I saw what went into the production of a show and the work that was put in at the studio and the songwriting process. Those are experiences from just being behind the scenes that I wouldn’t give up for anything!
You have a new EP album out. Tell us a little about that.
We really hadn’t planned on releasing any music ahead of the full length album, but we just kept getting questions about “Daddy Dance With Me,” and people saying, “surely you’re gonna get that out for Father’s Day and wedding season” so we started to consider it. Once we decided to release “Daddy Dance With Me” we thought it would be a great time to give a sampling of what’s on the album rather than just a single sneak peek. We wanted to let people know what else we have to offer and tell them that there is still more to come. It has really been an amazing ride and I am over the moon with the reaction I’m getting from it.
What’s next for you? Anything else we can look forward to?
I have been so busy with the release of the EP I haven’t had a chance to catch my breath and look much further ahead. My next project is to finalize everything with the album and get that ready to go and then hopefully I can get back out on the road with my band and do some shows.
Name three things you can’t live without?
My family, my dogs and my iPhone.
