Former Judas Priest drummer Les Binks dies

The drummer performed with the band in the late 70s

Former Judas Priest drummer Les Binks has died at the age of 73. No cause of death was revealed. James Leslie Binks was a Northern Irish heavy metal drummer who performed with the band from 1977 to 1979.

Judas Priest issued a statement on Monday (Apr 14th), stating, “We are deeply saddened about the passing of Les and send our love to his family, friends and fans. The acclaimed drumming he provided was first class – demonstrating his unique techniques, flair, style and precision – Thank you Les – your acclaim will live on…”

During his two-and-a-half years with the band, Binks contributed his powerful and intricate drumming to a pivotal period in Judas Priest’s development. He played on the studio albums Stained Class and Killing Machine (released as Hell Bent for Leather in the US), both released in 1978, as well as the influential live album Unleashed in the East in 1979. Notably, he co-wrote the epic track “Beyond the Realms of Death” on Stained Class. His drumming style, characterized by a faster, more aggressive approach with double bass drumming, helped shape the band’s evolving sound towards thrash and speed metal.

Before joining Priest, Binks was played drums for Eric Burdon and War; Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover’s 1974 album The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper’s Feast; Fancy, a pop band he played with that had two US hits in 1974; and Eddie Hardin’s Wizard’s Convention, performing on the group’s 1976 album featuring other notable musicians.

Following his stint with Priest, he was a member of Axis Point, Lionheart featuring ex-Iron Maiden guitarist Dennis Stratton, Tytan, Raw Glory, Broken Bones, and Kindred Spirit. In 2017, he formed Les Binks’ Priesthood to perform classic Judas Priest songs live. He was initially intending to join K.K.’s Priest, formed by ex-Judas Priest guitarist K.K. Downing, but was replaced due to injury.

Binks was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Judas Priest in November 2022 via the Award for Musical Excellence. He also performed three songs at induction ceremony, marking his first appearance with Priest in over 40 years and one of his final ever.
