Giant guitars along Sunset Strip to be auctioned for charity

If you’ve made your way down LA’s famous Sunset Strip recently, you’ve surely noticed giant guitar sculptures on display. Those guitars, however, will not be there much longer as they end their year-long tour this Friday when they are auctioned off for charity.

The Gibson GuitarTown On The Sunset Strip Charity Auction will feature thirteen 10-foot tall Art Guitars that will be auctioned on Friday, February 21st at a gala event at Bonhams in Los Angeles. All proceeds go to benefit Music For Relief, a non-profit organization that supports disaster relief.

The guitar sculptures celebrate Joan Jett, Janis Joplin, ZZ Top, Alice Cooper, Alanis Morissette and Dolly Parton. Other guitars feature work by Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, Kat Von D, Eugene Daub, among others.

Adding to the evening, photographer and author Robert Landau will exhibit photographic prints of key images from his award winning book Rock ‘n’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip.

The auction is open to the public, with previews on February 20th and 21st from noon-5 pm PST each day at Bonhams, located at 7601 West Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. The charity auction begins at 8 pm PST on February 21st. An online catalog featuring the star studded guitar lineup is available for review and download at bonhams.com/guitars.

The auction is expected to raise over $50,000 for Music For Relief, which each guitar expecting to auction for $3,000-5,000.
