Hasten Mercy is streaming now at Spotify
Head Fake’s Michael Baker has unveiled his solo project, Hasten Mercy, reminiscent of 1980’s synth-pop with country lyric-driven melodies. It highlights the influences of the ’80s like The Smiths and Stone Roses without changing the essence of his origin.
The project’s opening number, “Star You Are,” reminds me of U2’s experimental phase in the ’90s and ’00s when it toyed with electronic music and real instrumentation. The syncopated upbeat track is very inspirational, encouraging the listener to face their fears and follow their dreams. It would fit nicely on today’s pop radio and be a relief from what they currently play.
“These Things” is a slower number with a synth with a snap and kick backbeat. It’s much in line with the sonic of Justin Timberlake’s “Drink You Away,” but with less production. The lyrics see Baker finally getting the courage to pursue his love interest and apologizes for not doing so sooner.
“I Break Everything” has a nice slow melodic sound with a piano lead and soft programmed drums. It has a modern country feel with its melody and lyrics, where Baker sings of sparing his partner the heartbreak he’s caused in previous relationships and leaving even though it will hurt for a while.
Released under Global Heist Recordings/Neurodisc Records, Hasten Mercy is well-produced and gives the listeners something soothing to hear. The production is not overbearing and showcases Baker’s talented vocals and creative instrumentation.
