Huey Lewis anthology series set for Fox

New series is in pre-production

Fox has won the bid for a script-to-series commitment for an hourlong anthology series based on the music of Huey Lewis. Deadline reports the Untitled Huey Lewis Project is a “self-contained romantic comedy inspired by the music of a beloved pop star.” The show is an homage to 80s and 90s romantic comedies with Lewis being the inspiration for season one.

Lewis, Hart of Dixie creator Leila Gerstein and Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor of Kapital Entertainment are executive producing the project. The series is a co-production of Fox Entertainment and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.

The idea was developed by Kaplan, who pitched the anthology series to his childhood idol Lewis. After Lewis agreed to partner for it, Gerstein was approached to write the episodes. Kaplan’s worked with Gerstein on Fox’s The Underlings during the 2016/2017 TV season, and was the showrunner and creator of The CW’s Hart of Dixie for its four season on the air before working on Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and others.

No word on when production will begin.

Lewis is a GRAMMY-winning and Academy Award-nominated singer/songwriter/actor. His band, Huey Lewis & The News, have sold more than 30 million albums with many Top 10 singles over the past 40 years. Early last year, the pop rockers scored their highest debut chart position in 25 years with the release of their latest album Weather via BMG, their first featuring new material in 19 years. The album debuted on the Billboard charts in late February 2020 at No. 7 on the Independent Albums, Top Album Sales, and Top Current Album Sales, at No. 11 on Tastemaker Albums, their debut appearance on the Artist 100 chart at No. 65, and No. 71 on the Billboard 200.

Lewis was nearly forced to retire from music following a diagnosis of Meniere’s disease. The group was forced to cancel much of their tour plans in 2018 after Lewis shared news that “lower frequencies distort violently making it impossible to find pitch” and “I can’t perform until I improve.”
