The film stars OutKast rapper Andre’ 3000 as Hendrix
XLrator Media has released the first official trailer for the long-awaited Jimi Hendrix biopic, Jimi: All Is By My Side, which can be seen below.
The film, starring OutKast rapper Andre’ Benjamin (Andre’ 3000) as Hendrix, presents an intimate portrait of the sensitive young musician on the verge of becoming a rock legend. Directed by Academy Award-winning director John Ridley (12 Years A Slave), the revealing biopic covers a year of the guitar legend’s life from 1966-1967 as an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club to making his mark in London’s music scene up until his Monterey Pop triumph.
Die hard fans will be disappointed not hearing any of Hendrix’s music in the film. Hendrix’s estate did not approve Ridley’s script about Hendrix’s formative years, but Ridley decided to move forward anyway without using the legendary musician’s music. All new original music has been recorded and will be performed by Benjamin in the movie.
Jimi: All Is By My Side made its debut at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and again at the 2014 South By Southwest film festival. The film also stars Imogen Poots, Hayley Atwell, Burn Gorman, Ruth Negga and Amy De Bhrún, and is set to open in theaters across North America on September 26th.
The first authorized Hendrix biopic is currently in the works between Experience Hendrix and ICM Partners and is set to include some of Hendrix’s most signature songs, including “Foxey Lady,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Purple Haze,” “Voodoo Child,” and “Crosstown Traffic,” among others.
No word on when casting or production will begin.
