Perry’s “Roar” has earned Diamond certification

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has announced that Katy Perry’s iconic song “Roar” (Capitol Records) has earned a Diamond certification surpassing the ten million threshold counting song sales and streams in the United States. With the new certification of “Roar,” which follows previously Diamond-certified songs “Dark Horse” and “Firework,” Perry becomes the first artist in RIAA Gold & Platinum Program history to earn three RIAA Diamond Song Awards.

“Once again, Katy Perry has made history,” states Cary Sherman, Chairman and CEO of the RIAA. “We are thrilled to recognize Katy as the first artist to earn three Diamond Song Awards. Katy has a singular track record of notable Gold & Platinum achievements, and this triple Diamond milestone is now forever etched in our program’s history. Only 14 songs have earned Diamond status to date, and Katy owns three of them — what a remarkable achievement and testament to a groundbreaking artist.”

During the course of Perry’s career, 21 songs have achieved RIAA certification, and three studio albums have also been certified Platinum or multi-Platinum.

Almost 60 years since its inception, the RIAA’s iconic Gold & Platinum brand is the industry’s premier award for recognizing artistic achievement in the music marketplace. Officially launched in 1958, the program expanded in 1999 to include a Diamond Award honoring ten million or more certifications of an album or song. All RIAA certifications are calculated by Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman.
