Johns has produced Led Zeppelin, Cinderella and more
Legendary rock producer and engineer, Andy Johns passed away at age 61 on Sunday. Johns was known for producing and engineering and some of rock’s iconic albums by Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Van Halen. No cause of death was revealed at press time, but Johns was hospitalized last week for what rock guitarist Stacey Blades called a liver ailment. Blades told Billboard that the two were working together up until John’s brief hospitalization.
John’s produced and engineered some of music’s beloved rock gems. His engineering credits include Zeppelin’s II through Physical Graffiti and then again on their last studio effort Coda in 1982. Johns also engineered Free’s Highway, The Stones’ Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street, Goats Head Soup, It’s Only Rock And Roll, and Ladies And Gentleman: The Rolling Stones Movie, along with Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell and more.
He’s produced a whirlwind of albums by variety of acts including Jethro Tull’s Stand Up, Free’s Highway, Live Free! and Heartbreaker, Cinderella’s Night Songs and Long Cold Winter, Van Halen’s For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Chickenfoot’s Chickenfoot. Joe Satriani, Bon Jovi and Autograph have all had songs and albums produced by Johns.
Johns left some big shoes to be filled. In today’s world of processed music, there’s only a handful of producers who will leave such a legacy when they pass. They include Bob Rock, Rick Rubin, Phil Spector, Brian Eno and Butch Vig, just to name a few.
Rest in peace, Andy! You will be sorely missed, but live on through the records you’ve produced!
Here’s an interview GuitarShopTV did with Johns a few years ago discussing producing Led Zeppelin.
