STP made the announcement over the weekend
Introducing: Stone Temple Park… (just kidding)… It was revealed over the weekend that Stone Temple Pilots have recruited Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington as their new singer. Fans attending KROQ’s annual Weenie Roast over the weekend in Los Angeles got a real surprise when Stone Temple Pilots took the stage unannounced, for a blistering set with Chester Bennington of Linkin Park as lead vocalist.
The crowd went wild as the band performed STP classics like “Sex Type Thing” and “Vasoline”’ and also debuted a brand new song, “Out of Time”– the recording of which KROQ premiered immediately following the band’s explosive 40 minute set.
In an official announcement made on Sunday (May 19th), STP members Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz said that Bennington was at the top of their list for vocalists when they began working on new material. DeLeo couldn’t be he happier with the decision.
“Chester has a one-of-a-kind voice that we’ve admired for a long time,” the band writes. “We know Linkin Park will always be his priority, but we thought it would be cool to try something together. We managed to find the time to record a song and we’re all really happy with the result.”
In February, the band announced they had fired original singer Scott Weiland after more than 20 years on and off together. Weiland fired back that the band had no authority to fire him because he owns the all the rights to the band name he founded in the late ’80s. Weiland also claimed his lawyers were “looking into the matter,” but nothing regarding any lawsuits have been announced at this time.
