Album is updated edition to last year’s sophomore album
Luke Combs has been staying busy during the COVID-19 quarantine recording new music as he preps the release of What You See Ain’t Always What You Get, the deluxe edition to last year’s What You See Is What You Get. Six new songs, including the pandemic-inspired “Six Feet Apart,” will bring the album’s new total to 23 when it’s released on October 23rd via Sony Music Nashville.
Five of the tracks have yet to be unveiled, but the songs were written by Combs, 2021 tourmates Drew Parker and Ray Fulcher, Jonathan Singleton, Shane Minor, Randy Montana, Brandon Kinney, Robert Williford, Jamie Davis, Dan Isbell, Dustin Nunley and Wyatt Durrette. It’s likely the unannounced songs are ones Combs has performed during his livestreams throughout the pandemic.
This is Combs second deluxe album. In 2018, he released a deluxe edition of his 2017 debut This One’s For You called This One’s For You, Too. The 17-track collection heightens the breakout success of the album with five additional songs not on the original co-penned by Combs including long-awaited fan favorites like “Must’ve Never Met You” and “Houston, We Got a Problem.”
This summer, Combs made history once again as the first artist ever to have their first two studio albums spend 25 weeks or more at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart — breaking Taylor Swift’s previously held record at 24 weeks. The achievement comes as his acclaimed global No. 1 record, What You See Is What You Get, once again tops the chart, while his 2017 debut, This One’s For You, has spent 50 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 — tying the record for the longest reign atop the chart with Shania Twain’s Come On Over in 1997.
What You See Is What You Get debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart as well as Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart last November with 172,000 equivalent units sold and also enjoyed the largest streaming week ever for a country album with 74 million on-demand streams. It also achieved the biggest first week of album streams ever for a country artist on Apple Music and was the first country album ever to hit No. 1 on the platform’s U.S. overall albums chart, while also setting a new global record for first-week streams for a country album at Spotify and breaking the Amazon Music record for more first-week streams than any other country album debut. Continuing his record-breaking streak at country radio, Combs last single, “Does To Me” featuring Eric Church, recently spent two weeks at No. 1 on both the Billboard Country Airplay and Mediabase Country Aircheck charts making it his eighth consecutive No. 1 single — a first on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. Combs’ latest offering, ”Lovin’ On You,” is currently in the Top 5 and rising.
Combs was set to be headlining his What You See Is What You Get Tour, featuring Parker, Fulcher and Ashley McBryde, but was postponed to 2021 following COVID-19 health concerns. Continuing his monumental success on the road, Combs initially sold out 16 of the 24 shows since tickets went on-sale this earlier this year, including both of his Madison Square Garden headline debut performances.
