Rossington was 71

Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington has died at the age of 71. Rossington was the last remaining original member of the band.

“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today,” the band shares in a statement on social media.

“Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time.”

It’s unclear how Rossington passed, but he’s overcome several health battles over the years. Rossington was the longest tenured member, having cemented every line up of the band since 1964.

It’s unclear if the band will continue with Rossington as the band was scheduled to co-headline 22 summer dates with ZZ Top this year. The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour is set to feature Uncle Kracker on all dates from July through September.
