Pop star shares track from forthcoming Portals

Melanie Martinez is back from the dead with new song “Death,” the first track from her otherworldly upcoming album Portals, due March 31st. Co-produced by Martinez and CJ Baran, “Death” is now available via streaming services. The song was first teased via a 12-second clip on streaming platforms, which launched alongside a spellbinding trailer revealing the rebirth of fan-favorite character “Cry Baby” and quickly sparked a frenzy of theories from fans.

“Death” is the 13-track album’s opener, with full track listing revealed yesterday (Thurs, Mar 16th). Martinez lifted the curtain on Portals last month with an instantly viral TikTok video, with teasers now reaching 115 million views across socials. The cryptic clips confirmed the death of her notorious alter-ego “Cry Baby,” last seen considering whether to walk into the light at the beguiling conclusion of 2019’s internationally acclaimed full-length film, K-12. Further teasing has been led by top fan pages around the world receiving a white chocolate “egg” in the mail to hatch, each containing a separate flash drive with an audio snippet of an untitled track off the forthcoming album. Fans have downloaded each song and leaked it online, fueling the pandemonium and anticipation.

“Portals screams death is life is death is life is death is life. A continuous loop. A circle,” Martinez shares.

Portals marks the 27-year-old NYC-born singer-songwriter-filmmaker’s first full-length release in nearly four years following her two billion-streaming, RIAA Gold-certified second album, K-12, which proved a sensation upon its September 2019 release, entering the Billboard 200 at No. 3 – Martinez’s highest chart placement thus far – with further debuts at No. 1 on the alternative album chart, and No. 1 on the Soundtrack album chart.

Named to Forbes’ “30 Under 30 2021,” Martinez has brought her idiosyncratic vision to an array of diverse enterprises, including last year’s instantly sold out collaboration with footwear brand Koi. In addition to her myriad musical and visual efforts, Martinez has also shown herself to be an unforgettable live performer via sold out headline shows and festival performances around the planet. A number of hugely anticipated festival appearances are currently set though the next month, including Lollapalooza Argentina on March 18th, Lollapalooza Chile on March 19th, Bogota, Columbia’s Estéreo Picnic on March 23rd, and Lollapalooza Brazil on March 25th. A wide-ranging international live schedule will be announced soon.
