Metallica to release ‘No Life Til Leather’ demo cassette for Record Store Day

Metallica will celebrate Record Store Day 2015 with a cassette of its 1982 seven track demo tape, No Life ‘Til Leather.

The tape is what earned Metallica a record deal with Megaforce Records in the early ’80s and pre-dates 1983’s Kill ‘Em All. All but one of the demo’s seven tracks — “The Mechanix” — appears on Kill ‘Em All.

“We’ve been digging through the archives, gone to the original source material and re-mastered it to maximize the sound potential for 2015 without altering the original mixes in any way,” the band writes. “Recorded with the first line-up of the band that appeared live as Metallica, No Life ’til Leather has never been commercially available until now. Look for expanded versions coming on CD, vinyl and a collector’s set sometime this summer.”

The artwork has been made from drummer Lars Ulrich’s own copy and features his handwriting. The demo was recorded on July 6, 1982 at Chateau East Studio, Tustin, CA and features the original lineup of James Hetfield on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Ulrich on drums, a pre-Megadeth Dave Mustaine on guitar and Ron McGovney on bass.

The release kicks off a reissue campaign the band has lined up on their own Blackened Recordings. Since they own the master recordings to their catalog, Ulrich tells Rolling Stone, “It’s time for us to put out some next-level reissues and do the song and dance of the catalog that everyone else has done; the U2s and the Led Zeppelins and the Oasises. Instead of starting with Kill ‘Em All in 1983, we figured we’d go back another two years to when the band was formed in 1981.”

Ulrich states the band will announce “a big package” of reissues within a couple of months “depending on how quick we can turn it around.”

Last fall, we reported that the group was working on deluxe editions of both Kill ‘Em All and Ride The Lightning. The Four Horsemen have requested that fans send anything and everything, including bootlegged audio and video, concert tickets, set lists and more, from those eras that they may use for the projects.
