“If I Were A Boy” available now
GRAMMY-nominated country artist Mickey Guyton shares an Amazon Original cover of Beyoncé’s “If I Were A Boy,” available now to stream and purchase only on Amazon Music. The Amazon Original is part of Amazon Music’s new slate of content to honor Black History Month, highlighting the lasting and far-reaching impact of black music pioneers and today’s groundbreakers who have defied expectations and racial constructs to create radical and innovative work. For the Amazon Original artwork, Guyton collaborated with Interdisciplinary Artist Jamilla Okubo to create an original piece of cover art inspired by the song, featuring her silhouette surrounded by pastel colors to “embrace femininity and the power that women have.” In addition, Amazon Music HD customers using an Echo Studio can listen to Mickey Guyton’s Amazon Original song in immersive 3D Audio, which turns her cover of Beyoncé classic into a unique, multidimensional audio experience.
“It was important for me to record ‘If I Were A Boy’ because I have been fighting in country music for so long to just be accepted for who I am,” Guyton says. “This song represents the release and the birth of something new. Really this song means so much more to me, and has a completely different meaning, than when I first heard it.”
On her collaboration with Jamilla, she explains, “I discovered Jamilla through Instagram, and it has been really important for me to support Black Art in whatever capacity that is. When this project came together, I knew Jamilla needed to create the artwork, and it’s just so beautiful that we’re able to do this together.” She continues, “When people see the cover art for my version of ‘If I Were A Boy,’ I really hope that people don’t see me, but that they see themselves.”
Guyton is the second country artist to cover the track. Reba McEntire released the song as the second single from her 2010 album All The Women I Am.
