Song is singer’s first of 2020
Miley Cyrus has released her first song of 2020 called “Midnight Sky.” The pop star has also dropped a self-directed video to coincide with the track.
The attitude of the song and video was inspired by female music icons including Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett and Debbie Harry, according to a statement. The song is expected to appear on an upcoming project that has yet to be announced.
“Actually in ‘Midnight Sky,’ one of the lyrics that I’d ask everyone to kind of consider and kind of think about for themselves is the idea of ‘Forever and ever, no more,'” she tells SiriusXM’s Hits 1. “You know, you asked me to, kind of, explain briefly what my song is about. And I think it’s my relationship with the stigma that ‘forever,’ if it’s not successful or if you claimed something to be forever and you fail, then you’re a failure. And I just don’t think that — I think we’re kind of set up for devastation in that.
“From the time we’re little kids, we’re taught to claim other humans as our best friends forever. And you just don’t know who you’re going to be sitting [with] here right now. You never know who you’re going to evolve to be and who they’re going to evolve to be. And so I think that we, especially as women in relationships, a lot of the time we can be villainized when ‘forever doesn’t happen.’ And I think that you’re just really setting yourself up to kind of being disappointed — and not from a bitter or resentful way, but form a realistic and logical standpoint, especially in modern society. We’re changing and evolving and understanding ourselves in such a different perspective that it just feels like forever is definitely a big word, especially for someone young, especially as three year olds, we’re like, ‘Oh, this is my best friend forever.’ It’s like ‘You have no idea what Allie is going to become.”
Cyrus began teasing the track last week on social media when she published a video for “Start All Over” that she released as her Disney character Hannah Montana when she was 15. She wrote, “Meet Miley Cyrus… again. #SheIsComing #ButForRealThisTime.”
She also teased the track with a 15 second clip on the recently unveiled Instagram Reels where fans can create their own videos using song snippets.
Cyrus will debut the track on the VMAs on August 30th in New York City. She joins Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, Roddy Ricch, Maluma, CNCO, BTS, Doja Cat and J Balvin as performers. The event will be hosted by Kiki Palmer and forgo a studio audience as the performances will air through NYC’s five burroughs due to COVID-19 health guidelines.
