Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs make Billboard chart history

Both occupy the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100

Two country music superstars have made Billboard chart history with their latest singles. Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” leads the Billboard Hot 100 for the 12th week while Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” pulls into second place, marking the first time in 42 years country hits have reached the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100.

Both songs also hold the same spots on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, marking the first time ever that two country songs have secured the top two spots simultaneously on both charts. “Last Night” tops the Billboard Country Airplay chart for the eighth straight week and signifies Wallen as the only artist to have two singles spend eight or more weeks in the top spot on the chart in nearly 20 years. “Fast Car” climbs from No. 3 to the runner-up position within 10 weeks of charting.

Eddie Rabbit and Dolly Parton were the last two country artists to dominate the No. 1 and 2 positions on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981. Rabbit’s “I Love a Rainy Night” was No. 1 while Parton’s “9 to 5” followed at No. 2. Both songs held their top two positions for three weeks total.

Neither Wallen nor Combs are strangers to breaking chart records. Wallen matches a record held by Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, and the Titanicย soundtrack with his latest album, One Thing At A Time, spending 11 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. In March, Combs scored his 15th consecutive No. 1 single with “Going Going Gone.” The feat marks the longest consecutive streak for an artist since their debut and makes Combs one of the fastest to accumulate 15 No. 1’s, joining the ranks of Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and Alabama.
