Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow, Nicki Minaj and others were crowned winners during Sunday’s (Aug 28th) 2022 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). Harlow, Doja Cat and Harry Styles lead the nominations with eight each, but it was Swift, Harlow and Styles who were among the multiple winners during the annual celebration in New Jersey.
During her closing speech for winning “Video of the Year” for “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version),” Swift announced her new album Midnights is coming this fall.
“You guys, I’m just so proud of what we made, and I now that every second of this moment that we wouldn’t have been able to make this short film if it weren’t for you, the fans,” she she shared. “Because I wouldn’t be able to re-record [Red (Taylor’s Version)] if it weren’t for you. You emboldened me to do that. And I had sort of made up my mind that if you were going to be this generous and give us this, I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand-new album comes out October 21. And I will tell you more at midnight.”
Swift made history at the awards show. In addition to taking home three wins for “Video Of The Year,” “Best Long-Form Video” and “Best Direction,” she set multiple records this year with All Too Well: The Short Film, which she solo directed. Swift now stands out as “The First Ever Artist To Solo-Direct MTV’s VMA ‘Video of the Year’ Award-Winning Video” and “The First Artist in VMA history to Win Three ‘Video of the Year’ Awards.” She is also “the only female artist to win ‘Best Direction’ twice for directing her own videos.”
Global superstar Nicki Minaj will also performed live for the first time since 2018 and received the prestigious Video Vanguard Award. Red Hot Chili Peppers accepted the prestigious Global Icon Award and performed.
Other performers included Anitta, Blackpink, J Balvin, Harlow, Lizzo, Måneskin, Marshmello x Khalid, Panic! At The Disco with Kane Brown making his VMAs debut, Bad Bunny giving an exclusive “made for VMAs” performance from the show’s first-ever live remote from Yankee Stadium, and rappers Eminem and Snoop Dogg transforming the stage for a first of its kind performance of “From the D 2 The LBC” inspired by the world of the Otherside metaverse.
Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance as the Moon Person who appeared digitally floating above the stage. “And you know what? I needed the work,” he said at the beginning of the show, and adding “Hey VMAs, let’s get back to the fucking music, shall we?” at another point.
