Country superstar Carrie Underwood is set to star in NBC’s live production of “The Sound Of Music.” The Season 4 American Idol champ will play the iconic lead role of Maria von Trapp in the three hour live staging set to air on the Peacock Network December 5th. This particular version will be based on the original 1959 Broadway play and will be combined with the “spontaneity” of a live performance. Producers stated that performers will sing live with no allowances for lip-synching to recordings which is a change in today’s TV world.
“The Sound Of Music” is set in pre-World War II Austria and based on the romantic true story of Maria von Trapp, an aspiring nun who leaves the abbey to become a governess for the widower Captain von Trapp’s seven children where she finds herself falling in love with her employer and questioning her religious calling.
NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt announced during the network’s Upfronts presentation on Monday that such family-oriented productions are rarely aired in today’s market, “but we are doing it anyway.”
No other cast members have been announced at press time, but rehearsals will begin after she wraps up her current “Blown Away Tour” September 13th at the Puyallup Fair in Puyallup, WA.
