Ceremony takes place on June 10th
Brooklyn rapper Notorious B.I.G. will be honored with a street naming ceremony in the city on Monday, June 10th. The corner of St. James Place and Fulton Street will be renamed Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace Way.
The Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation will host the ceremony of one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time.
Ms. Voletta Wallace, Faith Evans, Notorious B.I.G.’s children: T’Yanna Wallace, and Christopher Wallace, representatives of the Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation, members of the city council and more will be on hand for the ceremony. Music will be provided by Hot 97’s DJ Enuff.
The public is invited to attend the event that starts at noon ET.
Leroy McCarthy championed the efforts to rename the street. He got approval from a New York City Council with a vote of 48-0 in favor of the name change in December, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“Honoring Biggie symbolizes more than just one man,” McCarthy told Rolling Stone in November. “It symbolizes a culture. It symbolizes a borough. It symbolizes a people, and hip-hop is worldwide.”
Before his death, Wallace became one of the biggest rappers of all time. Jay-Z, Eminem, the Game, and Lil Wayne all cite Wallace as influence in their rapping.
Wallace was murdered on the streets of Los Angeles on March 9, 1997. He would be 47 years old.
