One Direction, Justin Timberlake, The Rolling Stones, Katy Perry and Beyonce and Jay Z are some of the acts who have topped Pollstar’s 2014 Year End Top 20 Worldwide Tours list.
One Direction (1D) has proven it is the biggest band in the world by raking in $282.2 million in gross ticket sales with over 3.4 million tickets sold. 1D also tops the North American chart with $127.7 million tickets sold. That chart will be released in full in January.
The boy band outdid itself in 2014 as it ranked number ten in 2013 with $114 million in gross ticket sales worldwide. One Direction now holds the distinction of being the first artist to top the worldwide ticket sales chart in recent years that isn’t a classic rock or pop act. Bon Jovi, Madonna, U2 and The Rolling Stones typically reign at the top of the chart, save for “Walking With Dinosaurs” in 2010.
Justin Timberlake places second on the list with $184.7 million in gross ticket sales. The pop star sold less than half of his British/Irish boy band counterparts with 1.57 million tickets sold on his 20/20 Experience Tour which wrapped with back to back shows over New Year’s.
The only rock act in the top five is The Rolling Stones which comes in third with $165.1 million sales from over 862,000 tickets sold.
Katy Perry places fourth by generating $153.3 million in gross ticket sales from 1.4 million tickets sold on her Prism Tour which included Capital Cities, Kacey Musgraves and Tegan and Sara as openers.
Beyonce and Jay Z round out the top five with their On The Run summer tour. They grossed $109.7 million in sales from 979,781 tickets which also generated an HBO special.
Lady Gaga, The Eagles, Paul McCartney, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean are some other acts that made the Top 20 list. You can see them all here.
The Top 20 Worldwide Tours report is in advance of Pollstar’s industry research package and industry analysis that will be released in early January.
This unique chart is based on primary ticket sales data for the 2014 calendar year as reported directly to Pollstar along with extensive research to estimate sales of the missing shows in order to provide the most accurate possible ranking of global attractions.
