Original AC/DC drummer dies

The band shared the news on their socials

Colin Burgess who served as AC/DC’s original drummer from November 1973 until February 1974, has passed away at the age of 77. The band confirmed the news on its social media pages.

“Very sad to hear of the passing of Colin Burgess. He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace Colin,” they write.

No cause of death was given.

Burgess appeared on the Australian rockers’ first single, “Can I Sit Next To You, Girl,” which featured the original lineup of brothers Angus and Malcolm Young on guitars, Dave Evans on vocals, and Larry Van Kriedt on bass. Burgess was fired for being drunk on stage but alledges his drink was spiked. The band later re-recorded “Can I Sit Next To You, Girl” with drummer Phil Rudd, Evans on bass, and Bon Scott on vocals for their second album TNT in 1975. The song peaked at No. 50 in their native Australia.

Before joining AC/DC, Burgess was in Masters Apprentices from 1968 until 1972. Masters Apprentices was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Hall of Fame in 1998.
