Fans can add the cake to their collection

Weird news of the day goes to the eBayer who is auctioning the partially eaten cake served at Grant Hart’s memorial last year. The drummer/singer/songwriter, who rose to fame in the punk group Hüsker Dü in the 1980s, died in September 2017 at the age of 56 after a bout with liver cancer at his home in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The listing is described as “a dried and partially eaten chocolate and vanilla marbled cake from the private memorial for the late Grant Hart, drummer of the seminal punk rock band Hüsker Dü. The cake is in it’s original box with the usual wear and tear. The cake is dried, and will last indefinitely, as long as it is stored in a cool dry place. The icing is still vibrant in color, with a small amount of color bleed -normal for a preserved cake. It has been stored away from sunlight, in a dry container. This is an extremely interesting one-of-a-kind preserved cake for avid fans and rock n’ roll memorabilia collectors.”

The cake is described as being “partially eaten chocolate and vanilla marble” with white icing. It’s decorated with multi-colored flowers in the vein of the cover art of Hüsker Dü’s September 1985 release, Flip Your Wig. The listing states that the cake “is inscribed in yellow icing with the saying ‘We’ll see you a bit further down the trail -Grant.’ It was handcrafted and chef-prepared by Lunds & Byerlys Mpls. This cake is a collectors item, and not for human consumption.”

As of this writing, there’s a single bidder for $55. Shipping is $25 with less than five hours left on the auction. Many fans have reported the listing to eBay as they feel it violates the auction site’s terms and conditions. So far, the listing is still live.

Hart’s team shared the vile listing via Facebook earlier on Tuesday (April 3rd). The account writes, “I can’t believe someone would actually do this but after the past few weeks I have come to the conclusion that some people have no scruples or conscience. This one though takes the cake (no pun intended).”
