Pixies bassist quits band after 25 years

Deal was an original member

Pixies bassist Kim Deal has quit the band after more than 25 years. Band members Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering made the announcement via their Facebook page on Friday (June 14th).

“We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies,” the band states. “We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.”

Deal has yet to make a statement on her departure. She is currently on tour with her other band, The Breeders, celebrating the 20th anniversary reissue of their landmark album Last Splash.

Deal was an original member of the Pixies when they formed in 1986. The band split in 1993 and then reformed in 2004. They took their 1989 album Dolittle on a two year tour in 2009 with Deal on bass. The Pixies have not toured since.

The Pixies have only released four albums throughout their 25 year career. Their last LP was 1991’s Trompe le Monde and their last single was “Bam Thwok” in 2004. A new book, Pixies: A Visual History, is currently in the works thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign.
