This will be the singer/actress’ third TV series

Reba McEntire is returning to television in an hourlong “Southern Gothic soap opera” created by Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry for ABC. Deadline reports that Cherry has written the pilot to the untitled series which has “received a script commitment plus penalty in a competitive situation,” after a bidding war.

McEntire will play the local sheriff in the small town of Oxblood, Kentucky in which a suspected act of terrorism happens at a 4th of July parade. A cocky FBI agent of Middle Eastern descent is sent to investigate in which the pair uncover secrets “far darker than either could have ever imagined.”

Cherry will not only write, but serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series. McEntire, Sabrina Wind, Mindy Schulthesis and Michael Hanel will also co-executive produce the series. Shultheis and Hanel also served as executive producers on McEntire’s previous two TV series, The WB/CW’s Reba and ABC’s Malibu Country.

No word on when the series will begin production or where it falls on ABC’s schedule.
