Ringo Starr plays ringmaster to night of rock hits with All Starr Band

The Beatle is on a summer tour

It was, essentially, a greatest hits round-robin from the superstars on stage at Wolf Trap Tuesday night (June 17th). Beatles icon Ringo Starr brought his All-Starr band to the DMV. Featuring Steve Lukather and Warren Ham from Toto; Hamish Stuart of Average White Band; Colin Hay from Men at Work; as well as prolific utility players Buck Johnson on keys and Gregg Bissonnette on drums.

Ringo kicked the night off singing two numbers before hopping behind the drum kit. There, he assisted Lukather with a rousing “Rosanna,” Hamish Stuart with the jumping “Pick Up the Pieces,” and Hay on a nostalgic “Down Under.” Warren Ham featured on sax during “Pick up the Pieces” with Hamish All three were signature tunes for their respective singers’ groups.

The first Beatles number of the night was “Yellow Submarine,” on which Starr is the original vocalist. His voice has barely aged, and the crowd—all on their feet—was transported back to the 60s. Ringo also offered vocals on “Octopus’s Garden,” another throwback to a lead he took in the Beatles cannon.

The soft rock covers returned in the back half, with “Africa,” “Who Can it Be Now,” and even Hay’s original “Overkill” present. Ringo offered “Look Up,” from his recently released country record of the same name. Recorded in Nashville, the genre welcomed the Rock Hall member with open arms. He also performed Johnny Russell’s “Act Naturally.” For this

The night closed with a stirring “With a Little Help from my Friends.” The crowd was on their feet, loving every note. Ringo’s place in pop culture is unquestionable. And this night of music is a celebration of the genre the Beatles rocket-fueled into the mainstream. Ringo, performing with a group of people who are not shy about sharing that Starr and the Beatles inspired them, is humble and clearly still having fun on stage, decades after Beatlemania swept the nation.

And those players who have their own claim to fame? Grinning like kids in a candy store, standing next to a living legend.
