Wednesdays is his first album in three years

Grammy nominated artist Ryan Adams has released a new album Wednesdays, his first in three years, 17th in total, and the first in a trilogy of work — which also includes Big Colors that was postponed from last year, and a double album called Chris. Receiving acclaim from fans and critics alike, this album heralds a new era for Adams and explores the complex heart of Adams, through a journey of love, pain, and heartbreak. The video for lead single, “I’m Sorry & I Love You,” is available below.

Wednesdays arrived with ease when the prolific singer-songwriter was in New York a few winters back working on another album. For Adams, Wednesdays is very much a “back to basics songwriter experience” as he explored the infinite possibilities of the piano and guitar, bared his soul and instead of trying to force a narrative, let the experience be what it was and accept something entirely different. The narrative is personal and intimate. His raw, powerful vocals and brutally honest lyrics are showcased in his own inimitable style.

“I was recording an album called Big Colors in New York City at my home away from home, Electric Lady Studios. The sessions were bright and fun and being back in NYC in the fall opened my heart and soul to all the nostalgia and wonder the city provides. It’s my spiritual home, the home of my heart, and the big brash modern sounds of Big Colors soon gave way to these stark open outlines of what became Wednesdays,” Adams states.

“The environment of this album is like a series of measurements on the weight of love. It attempts to paint a picture of the way love and loss can create chasms in life and how people fill in those spaces.”

Wednesdays is available now digitally and the physical release due Friday, March 19, 2021. Fans can pre-order the CD and extended LP including a 7” with two bonus tracks.

“Limbo. That’s what a Wednesday is sometimes. Maybe a portal. Maybe a bridge across. But it can hang there like a forever unless maybe you’re out to sea and everything is just another token of the blue,” Adams says of the record.

He continues, “This record hasn’t been doing any good gathering dust over there in the stacks of other records I’ve crafted out of these broken parts of myself. It felt to me like it wanted to, no maybe it needed to get out for some air. It’s meaning changed as it was written and even now I’m not so sure what it might be. But it’s time to let go. I release it to anyone who needs it, with love and humility in hopes everyone is finding some shelter in these stormy times.”

Praised as one of rock’s most talented songwriters, Adams is a seven-time Grammy nominated artist, a producer for greats such as Willie Nelson, Jesse Malin, and Jenny Lewis, and a lauded collaborator with the likes of Weezer, Fall Out Boy, America, and more.

Wednesdays was written in New York City and produced in Los Angeles by Ryan Adams, Beatriz Artola and Don Was.

Adams’ passion for writing continues, and he is currently working on his first novel. His music has spanned multiple musical genres, and has been incorporated in film and television specials such as Judd Apatow’s top grossing production Bridesmaids, This is 40, popular HBO TV series’ True Blood and Felicity, and his song, “Stay Alive” appeared in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, starring Ben Stiller.
