Sam Smith ‘In The Lonely Hour’ holds steady in Billboard Top 20 a year after release

On the one-year anniversary of its U.S. release, Sam Smith’s GRAMMY-winning debut album, In The Lonely Hour (Capitol Records), is still charting in the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and has been certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA. Four other new certifications further underscore the tremendous success the young U.K. artist has had in the States. The No. 1 single “Stay With Me” has been certified 6x Platinum. First time certifications include a Platinum award for “Lay Me Down” and Gold certifications for “Leave Your Lover” and “Money On My Mind.” These certifications bring Smith’s U.S. tally to two million certified Album sales and 11.5 million certified Single sales.

In its first year of release in the U.K., In The Lonely Hour logged an astonishing 50 weeks in the Top 5, a chart feat only previously achieved by The Beatles, according to OfficialCharts.com. The last, and only other, debut album in Official Charts history with this kind of unshakeable performance in its first year of release was The Beatles’ Please Please Me in 1963. Smith was the only artist to sell one million albums in both the U.S. and the U.K. in 2014.

Earlier this year, Smith set a record at the GRAMMY Awards, winning a total of four awards – the most ever received by a U.K. artist following the release of a debut album. Smith was named Best New Artist, In The Lonely Hour took Best Pop Vocal Album honors and “Stay With Me” won awards for both Record and Song of the Year.

Smith will return to North America this summer for his second arena/theatre tour of 2015. The month-long run will kick off on July 18th at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC.
