Sam Smith, Normani no longer performing at 2019 BBMAs

The artists were scheduled to perform a duet

Sam Smith and Normani are no longer performing at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs), set for May 1st in Las Vegas. Smith pulled out of the performance following three canceled concerts in South Africa two weeks ago due to medical reasons.

“In the wake of cutting his South African tour short last week, Sam’s medical specialists are requiring him to have further rest,” a statement from Smith’s team reads.

“Regrettably this means that he will be unable to perform at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku this weekend or the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas next week.

“We apologize for the disappointment for those affected, but the primary focus at this time needs to be Sam’s recovery and health.”

Smith was to perform “Dancing with a Stranger” with Normani at next week’s awards show. Many fans are upset that Normani will no longer perform and demand she be able to take the stage solo.

“Just because Sam Smith can’t perform cause he’s sick doesn’t mean you take the slot away. Normani generated so much buzz last year and would easily be the best performer this year even solo. She can carry her own. Fix it @BBMAs #LetNormaniPerform,” one Twitter user shares.
