First debut K-Pop artist to enter Billboard 200 at No. 1

K-pop all-star group SuperM makes its debut atop the Billboard 200 with its first EP, The 1st Mini Album ‘SuperM’ – making history as the first debut K-pop artist to launch at No. 1 on the tally. Selling 168,000 equivalent album units in the first week of release, SuperM also set the record for biggest-ever debut sales by a K-pop artist in the U.S. Their five-track EP was released as a joint venture between SM Entertainment, Korea’s largest entertainment company, and Capitol Music Group (CMG) with distribution via Caroline.

“We are so happy that we ranked No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It’s like a dream come true,” the band shares. “We are happy that our new challenge achieved such great results, and we would like the thank everyone who believed in us and supported us. We will work hard to show our super synergy and do our best throughout our activities.”

“SuperM made history today. Congratulations to the group, Producer Soo-Man Lee, SM Entertainment and everyone at Capitol and Caroline. This is only the beginning. There’s lots more to come from SuperM!” comments Capitol Music Group Chairman & CEO Steve Barnett.

The massive launch began on the eve of the EP’s release, with the global livestream of the band’s Premiere Event at Capitol Studios, where they unveiled their first single and video, “Jopping.” The video racked up over 25 million views in its first week of release.

On Saturday, October 5th, Vine Street was closed to traffic to accommodate the crowd at the SuperM Village, presented by Capitol Records outside its landmark Hollywood Tower headquarters. Thousands of fans turned out for the mega-event, which featured photo opps, pop-up shops, food trucks and more. The festivities culminated with SuperM’s first-ever live performance, which was viewed via global livestream by more than two million fans. Enormous crowds turned out for the group’s three Los Angeles in-store appearances in the days that followed.

On Wednesday, October 9th, SuperM made its world television debut, performing “Jopping” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Afterward, the group taught DeGeneres about jopping. The clip went viral, hitting one million views in 12 hours. SuperM will introduce their first album and show new sides of all seven members through its first series of live shows – We Are The Future Live – starting November 11th. The headline run will include shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden and The Forum in Los Angeles.

Drawn from some of the most popular K-pop acts in the world, SuperM’s seven members are Taemin from SHINee, EXO’s Baekhyun and Kai, NCT 127’s Taeyong and Mark, and Ten and Lucas of Chinese band WayV. Refinery 29 recognized SuperM as “K-pop’s most buzzed-about new act” and E! praised the group’s “epic debut.” Billboard – which hailed them as “K-POP’S AVENGERS” – said, “SuperM’s distribution of talent is their unifying force.” Forbes observed, “this can only work with a team that has a palpable synergy among them like SuperM shows.”
