Country pop superstar Taylor Swift has been added to the cast of the The Weinstein Company and Walden Media’s upcoming film adaptation of young adult novel The Giver. Swift joins the cast alongside Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard of HBO’s True Blood, Odeya Rush of The Odd Life of Timothy Green and Cameron Monaghan of Showtime’s Shameless.
The Hollywood Reporter describes the film about a society in which there is no sickness, conflict or racism.
Thwaites will star as a young boy who is selected for life service as the Receiver of Memories. He works with Bridges’ character, The Giver, an old man who teaches the boy to use his sensory gifts.
Holmes will play Thwaites’ character’s mother while Streep will play the antagonistic Chief Elder, who assigns the young their tasks. No word on what character Swift will play.
The movie is scheduled to start filming October 7th in Cape Town, South Africa and will be directed by Salt’s Phil Noyce.
The film is set to hit theaters on August 15, 2014.
