The third annual “Hit Like A Girl” global drumming contest for female percussionists is underway. The contest, which began January 24th, runs through February 28th at hitlikeagirlcontest.com and features two age groups, 17 and under and 18 and over.
The event is produced by Hit Like A Girl Contest in conjunction with founding sponsors DRUM! Magazine, TRX Cymbals, and Tom Tom: The Magazine of Female Drummers.
Weekly winners will receive GoPro Cameras. In addition, special drawings of heads, sticks, shirts, and accessories will occur during the contest. Plus, all entrants receive a Digital Goodie Bag which can include several of the following items: free web site memberships, access to online lessons, online magazine subscriptions, and online method book downloads, or other prizes. Prizes provided by Alfred Publishing, Drumchannel, DRUM! Magazine, Hudson Music, Online Drummer, and Tom-Tom Magazines.
There will be one Grand Prize Winner and ten runners-up per age group.
The Grand Prize Winner of the under 18 group will receive one PDP CB4 Concept Series Birch four piece drumset in Charcoal to Natural Fade Lacquer with DW 3000 Series Hardware Retail, Zildjian 15″ K Light Hi-hats, 17″ K Dark Thin Crash, 19″ K Dark Thin Crash, 22″ K Ride, $500 Evans Gift Certificate, 12 pair of Vater drumsticks, a set of SKB Cases, one Tune-bot Drum Tuner, one set of Heil HDK-5 Drum Mics and a black Kickport Bass Drum Sonic Enhancement.
The Grand Prize Winner of the 18 and over age group will receive one PDP CM6 Concept Series Maple six piece drumset with DW 3000 Series Hardware, Zildjian 14″ Newbeats Hi-hats, 16″ A Thin Crash, 18″ A Thin Crash, 23″ Sweet Ride, $500 Evans Gift Certificate, 12 pair of Vater drumsticks, a set of SKB Hard cases and Cymbal Bag, one Tune-bot Drum Tuner, a set of Heil HDK-5 Drum Mics, one black Kickport Bass Drum Sonic Enhancement and one Cleartune CT-300 custom in-ear monitors. Plus, the 18+ winner will be invited to perform at the 2014 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana from November 19-22, 2014.
Runners-up will receive a variety of prizes, depending on placement, from drumsets to sticks to snare drums to gig bags and more.
The contest is open to all amateur female drummers of all ages from all over the world. Drummers who make more than $30k per year or have an endorsement deal are not eligible. Drummers should submit a three minute video showing off their skills which will be judged by a panel of female drummers including Sheila E., Hannah Ford, Emmanuelle Caplette and more.
Contestants will be judged by the following criteria: 70% on performance (technique, chops, originality, creativity, groove, and feel), 20% on style (showmanship, vibe and personality) and 10% on their personal story, background and potential.

David Levine of TRX Cymbals conceived the Hit Like A Girl Contest in 2011 to showcase under-deserving female drummers by showing their support and promoting their development. Since then the contest has attracted 700 contestants from 42 countries. It has generated millions of page views and hundreds of thousands of fans votes around the world. And it has raised the visibility of female drummers and spotlighted the efforts of girls and women.
