During her time at MTV, Kennedy was known as a “pull no punches” kind of VJ. A television personality not afraid being herself, even if it meant incurring the wrath of her MTV/Viacom bosses or the self-important rock stars of the alternative era who took themselves too seriously. In The Kennedy Chronicles—The Golden Age of MTV Through Rose-Colored Glasses (Thomas Dunne Books), Kennedy shares chapter after chapter of her time at MTV, starting out as barely 20-year-old plucked out of obscurity to be one of the premier faces on MTV during what many consider MTV’s last golden age of music videos.
From her near firing after performing simulated oral sex during the 1994 MTV Music Awards standing next to then New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, to her many near flings with various rock stars (which Kennedy was able to fend off and remain a virgin for the majority of her MTV stint), The Kennedy Chronicles is a great read and should be required reading for all students of MTV.
For anyone who lived during the alternative era, everyone knows MTV’s Alternative Nation was the go to place for fans to hear the latest news and videos of acts such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Nine Inch Nails. Hosted by Kennedy, she shares how pretentious Thom Yorke really could be but warns Radiohead devotees of her unpleasant experience with the Radiohead frontman before she slams their hero. Kennedy tells us how she and Dave Navarro almost did it in a coffin, various adventures during MTV’s Beach House, how Michael Jordan bet her virginity during a game of craps, and why being an out of the closet Republican during MTV’s Choose or Loose heyday wasn’t exactly the “in” thing to be back then, all in hilarious and smartly written detail.
Written in Kennedy-esque speak, with lots of off-beat expressions the way you remember Kennedy on the air, The Kennedy Chronicles will surprise, shock and answer some questions you had about your favorite rock stars you may have had with each turn of the page. There’s so much packed in this book you wonder what she left out. Six years at MTV, there must be a second book in her but, we’ll gladly cherish these gems. It is one of the best celebrity insider books you’ll pick up.
