Shattuck was 56

Kim Shattuck, vocalist, guitarist and founder of pop/punk band The Muffs, has died at the age of 56. The singer passed away in her sleep Wednesday (Oct 2nd) following a two year battle with ALS.

Her husband, Kevin, shared the news via social media, with former Pandoras bandmate Melanie Vammen sharing his post. “This morning the love of my life Kim passed peacefully in her sleep after a two year struggle with ALS,” her husband writes. “I am the man I am today because of her. She will live with all of us through her music, our shared memories and in her fierce creative spirit. I love you always Kimmy. Thank you for sharing your life with me.”

The news comes two weeks before The Muffs release their first album in five years, No Holiday. The album features 18 new tracks available on CD, double LP with a laser-etched fourth side, and digital. No Holiday is a celebration of everything the band has always stood for, and continues to be.

“I think this new album represents the depth of our band like none of our others,” bassist Ronnie Barnett of the project. “It could have easily been aptly called The Many Moods Of The Muffs. All of our strengths: melody, big rock, sweetness, nastiness . . . All on display and readily apparent. The three of us, after all these years, are a family. The love between us is well represented here. We laid it all out there on this one.”

Shattuck wrote the songs on the album over a 26 year period, beginning in 1991. “I wrote the songs between 1991 and 2017,” Shattuck shares. “We decided to have a long album and use songs that had been in my arsenal but were weeded out for super concise albums. They were all great songs and we didn’t want them to go to waste. No way!”

Shattuck was a touring member of the Pixies following original bassist Kim Deal’s departure in 2013. Shattuck’s Pixies involvement only lasted a few months before she announced her departure on social media and went back to focus on The Muffs.
