The Scarlet Opera bass player Daniel Zuker dies

Zuker was diagnosed with cancer late last year

The Scarlet Opera bassist Daniel Zuker has died following a brief diagnosis of Stage IV esophageal adenocarcinoma cancer. Frontman Luka Bazulka revealed the devastating news on social media today (Tues, Apr 22nd).

“Last night, surrounded by friends, family and love, our brother, Danny Zuker, peacefully passed away,” Bazulka writes. “For those fortunate enough to witness Danny perform, it goes without saying that his presence felt larger than life. An energy so infectious and radiant that those seated in the back might feel as if they were front row. Being on stage brought him the most joy, the most fulfillment; it was where he truly lived.

“Offstage, Danny was no different. His booming laugh would fill a room in a heartbeat, and in more ways than one, Danny was the heart of this band. He was brutally honest, deeply insightful, and underneath the sunglasses, bushy beard and towering figure was one of the most empathetic, sensitive and caring friends one could ask for.

“Lasting friendships, memories and deep connections were made with many of you; he felt your love and was endlessly inspired by it.

“Danny, you will always be loved, beyond words.”

Zuker was diagnosed late last year, but revealed the news to fans in February 2025.

โ€œOnce you get diagnosed, itโ€™s no longer really your diagnosis, itโ€™s the diagnosis of everyone around you. And it affects everyone around you heavily,โ€ he said in an Instagram video at the time.

The band — also featuring keyboardist Colin Kenrick, guitarist Chance Taylor, and drummer Justin Siegal — shared a joint message thanking Zuker for his strength, and describing just how much they love and appreciate him.

โ€œThe past two months have been illuminating of just exactly how much we love and lean on one another – how much Danny brings to the table, both with his incredible and undeniable talent, as well as his wit and charm,โ€ their statement read.

The pop-rock band hails from Los Angeles, California and is signed to Republic Records. They formed in 2022, though its members have been playing together since 2016 under the name Perta. The band is known for its theatrical flair, glam rock aesthetic, and Bazulka’s powerful vocals, often drawing comparisons to Freddie Mercury and Elton John. Their music blends rock with elements of funk, pop, and Broadway bombast.

The group has quickly gained attention for their captivating live performances and unique sound, touring and making their late-night television debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden in 2023. They have collaborated with notable songwriters and producers like David Stewart and Rick Nowels. Their name, inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, reflects their aim to be a refuge for the misunderstood and misrepresented.
