Jack White’s Third Man Records in Nashville, TN is opening a special unique attraction on Record Store Day on Saturday, April 20th. White will unveil the Third Man Records Recording Booth as a permanent attraction to his label’s Downtown Nashville storefront. The booth is a refurbished 1947 Voice-o-Graph machine that will allow the public to record two minutes of audio that will be dispensed on a one-of-a-kind 6″ phonograph disc that the user can take with them.
Customers insert a few custom Third Man Records tokens into the machine, step inside and record two minutes of audio, whether it be a song, a message to a loved one, an audio postcard or just a chance to hear oneself as others hear them. Afterward, the customer walks away with a disc of the recording. Third Man also encourages the user to mail their discs to a loved one, so they will offer custom-printed envelopes and postage stamps for purchase as well.
The Third Man Records Recording Booth is dubbed as the only machine of its kind in the world to be fully operational and open to the public. It will be located across the room from Third Man’s Dip’n’Dunk photo booth where folks can even include a photo strip inside the record they make.
The recording booth is just one of the many activities Third Man Records has in store for RSD. They will expand their business to a poolside pop-up shop as part of the Ace Hotel’s Desert Gold festivities in Palm Springs, CA during the final weekend of the Coachella Music & Arts Festival in nearby Indio.
If you’re in Nashville, stop by the Blue Room where a limited number of The White Stripes’ Elephant will be reissued on multi-colored white and red vinyl beginning at 11 am, and lasting until 2 pm or until the all stock is sold out. Each purchase of Elephant will include a free White Stripes poster while supplies last. The Back Patio will include several food vendors including Hot Diggity Dog and Bang Candy Company with a special treat concocted just for RSD. The Store and Novelty Lounge will be selling a bunch of new merch from 11 am until 2 pm including iPhone cases, new t-shirts, RSD Ambassador patches, a new aluminum 45 adapter, buttons and a lenticular poster made specially for Coachella. Of course, live music will be heard throughout the day.
Record Store Day lasts all weekend long at Coachella. The poolside pop up at the Ace Hotel will have a limited number of the exclusive Elephant reissues on hand along with a free White Stripes poster, while supplies last. The pop-up will also offer a ton of new merch made specifically for Coachella. Free poolside and indoor music will also be heard.
