U2 releases ‘Songs Of Innocence’ free through iTunes at Apple Event

U2’s latest studio album Songs Of Innocence (Interscope Records), containing 11 new tracks, will be released on October 14th. The news comes after the album was gifted by Apple to over half a billion iTunes Music Store customers worldwide earlier today (Sept 9th) during an appearance at Apple’s unveiling of the new iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch. Apple CEO Tim Cook calls the album’s release the “biggest album release in the history of music” as it was automatically distributed to all iTunes users in 119 countries simultaneously.

Songs of Innocence is U2’s most personal work to date, charting the band’s earliest influences from 70s rock and punk rock to early 80s electronica and ambient music and giving insight into how and why the band came together. The album deals with themes of home and family, relationships and discovery and was recorded in Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles and is produced by Danger Mouse, along with Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Declan Gaffney and Flood.

Songs Of Innocence is available to all iTunes Music subscribers, Beats Music and iTunes Radio exclusively through October 13th. You can download it for free here.

The album was finished last week and Bono states, “We’ve made several albums in the last five years, we just haven’t released them.”

In addition, U2 will be releasing a deluxe version of Songs Of Innocence that will feature a deluxe, gatefold double album, containing an acoustic session of songs from the album and four additional tracks: “Lucifer’s Hands,” “The Crystal Ballroom,” “The Troubles (Alternative Version)” and “Sleep Like a Baby Tonight (Alternative Perspective Mix by Tchad Blake).”

The album will also be available as a gatefold, double white-vinyl LP with an exclusive remix of “The Crystal Ballroom.”
